Zone Book Club?

Category: book Nook

Post 1 by Liz (The Original) on Friday, 10-Aug-2007 22:50:57

Hi all:
I looked through the board topics, and don't think this has been covered. If so, please forgive me.

I was wondering if people on here would perhaps want to start a Zone book club. We could read one book a month or however frequently we decide, and then have a discussion about it afterwards, as is normal with such things. I'm not even sure if there is any interest, but being an avid reader myself, I thought it would be a cool idea. Thoughts? Opinions? Questions?

A neat idea. If it were to take place I might even join it.

I might join in depending on the books that were chosen.

Post 4 by Selena Fan (Account disabled) on Saturday, 11-Aug-2007 3:09:01

So it would be like the book club on the Oprah show?

Post 5 by Blondie McConfusion (Blah Blah Blah) on Saturday, 11-Aug-2007 6:01:52

Liz, I also love reading and really like this idea. I think one book a month is a good plan since not everyone would have the same amount of time to spend reading.

Post 6 by PorkInCider (Wind assisted.) on Saturday, 11-Aug-2007 6:57:10

Liz it sounds plausable, though we need to ensure that everyone can access the chosen books, and in a format they are most comfortable with. many can't sit and listen to a synthetic voice read a book, and so couldn't cope with e-text, unless they had braille displays. Audio isn't always available either.
then there is the fac that not everyone will read every genre of books, and if you get a mijority that prefer a particular genre, are you going to end up picking mostly books from that field, and so pushing out those who just can't enjoy that kind of a book?

Post 7 by louisa (move over school!) on Saturday, 11-Aug-2007 7:38:11

Hello I think this is quite a good idea though I do agree with the previous poster on the format and such. However as I said I do like the idea.

Post 8 by Blue Velvet (I've got the platinum golden silver bronze poster award.) on Saturday, 11-Aug-2007 9:24:17

I agree it is a good idea, but as Kevin said, getting people to agree on a book genre, a specific book title, and then the issue of whether everyone can get the book can all be problematic. I currently am part of an e-mail list for people who like listening to mysteries. They started a "monthly read" but I am usually unable to get the required book in time for the discussion or have no interest in a particular author. If we do such a thing, we will just have to accept that not everyone who is interested is going to want to or be able to participate every month. Perhaps a different genre each month would be good. And we should nominate book titles and have voting. It may take awhile to get things set up, but it is a good idea.

Post 9 by Liz (The Original) on Saturday, 11-Aug-2007 23:05:11

Yeah, a different genre every month would be interesting, I think. There would definitely be a lot of details to iorn out, but I guess if enough people were interested, maybe we could sort everything out.

Post 10 by Blue Velvet (I've got the platinum golden silver bronze poster award.) on Sunday, 12-Aug-2007 10:19:36

If this doesn't work out, there are a number of e-mail lists for the discussion of books. Most of the ones I know of are specifically for the blind, and I know of one that is for those who like to listen to mystery and detective novels on audio. This one is not specifically for the blind, but it does have a few blind members. If anyone wants specific e-mail addresses to join these lists, please send me a PM.

Post 11 by Chris N (I just keep on posting!) on Sunday, 12-Aug-2007 10:25:11

If you all want to do voting, and someone will send me a list of books to add in as choices, I'd be happy to set up a poll. I think this is a neat idea.

Post 12 by Liz (The Original) on Sunday, 12-Aug-2007 13:35:48

Hmm, but I guess we'd have to have a different poll every month, then. Would that be feasible? It is a really neat idea, though. I know there are email lists out there that do it, but I thought it would be nifty to have a book club with Zone members.

Post 13 by Raskolnikov (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Sunday, 12-Aug-2007 14:39:18

This sounds interesting, and I'd like to participate if and when it works out.

Post 14 by Chris N (I just keep on posting!) on Sunday, 12-Aug-2007 18:54:14

Monthly polls are feasible.

Post 15 by Blue Velvet (I've got the platinum golden silver bronze poster award.) on Sunday, 12-Aug-2007 20:12:58

One of the e-mail lists I belong to has a monthly group read. Book titles are nominated and then there is a vote. We generally pick the book for the next several months. I think, for example, the four books getting the most votes are set up for the next four months in a row. I'm not sure if I'm explaining this clearly. Another thing they do on this list is pick the date of the 20th of each month to begin the discussion. So once you know what the book is, you can try to get it and read it before the 20th of the designated month. Then the list moderator has a list of questions he uses to get the discussion started. Not every one in the group participates every month either because of not being interested in the book for that month or not being able to get it in time. But this is the model you might want to try to follow.

Ooo, Becky, I like that! Maybe this will end up working after all.

I also like this idea

Post 18 by mistressamber87 (That sarcastic smart ass opinionated bitch you wish you didn't have to hear from) on Sunday, 12-Aug-2007 21:33:29

I'd love something like this as well.
If it weren't illegal to do so, obviously, I'd think it would be cool to post a chapter a day as board posts, and then after the book was finished, continue that topic, and discuss it.
But since it's illegal to post coppyrighted material just anywhere, it won't work.
But i would be interested in helping set something like this up.

Post 19 by Liz (The Original) on Monday, 13-Aug-2007 10:07:34

Amber, (I think that's your name), if you're interested in helping set it up, perhaps you can help me get things going, then. I'm still not sure there is enough interest, though. Come on people, if you're interested, post and let us know! lol

Liz, if this is something you are serious about setting up, especially as a cl, why not consider puting an announcement on the news file, asking for those who don't read the boards to respond in some way also suitable for you, so that you find out if there are others out of the many who never come near the boards?

Post 21 by Liz (The Original) on Monday, 13-Aug-2007 12:49:19

Oh yeah, I forgot that I can now post things in there...lol. I'll see about doing that.

Post 22 by Resonant (Find me alive.) on Monday, 13-Aug-2007 12:54:48

Just adding to the list here. Totally up for this, and I think the pole might be the way to go. We're probably all less likely to read outside our comfort zone that way, which is a bit sad, but I guess it's the fairest way to choose, and it takes the pressure off any one person.

Post 23 by Selena Fan (Account disabled) on Tuesday, 14-Aug-2007 1:57:08

Kev you made some excelent points. It takes the state library about 3 to 4 weeks to send me the books that I order. Becky I'd love to sign up for your book email list. Liz I'd love to see this Zone book club started.

Post 24 by Miss Prism (the Zone BBS remains forever my home page) on Saturday, 18-Aug-2007 4:32:11

I'd love to be part of a book group as well. Email lists seem to be the easiest way to manage, but I'll try whatever you all come up with. (only I'm *not* reading any fluff romances! LOL)

Post 25 by The Giggling Cowboy (Veteran Zoner) on Tuesday, 21-Aug-2007 11:41:21

I love this idea, and I'm on it like brown on Chocolate. *GRIN*

I think if people are truly interested, they will do what they need to do to get the books, myself. I know I would.

Keep up the work, Liz. This is a great idea! Don't let it die!

love this idea.

Damn, i love fluff romances. lol

Post 28 by emerald (Generic Zoner) on Thursday, 20-Sep-2007 0:15:29

I think it's a great idea, but is there going to be some place where we can go to talk about the book, and are we going to pick many different authors and genres? How much time will we have to find and read the book? I think it would be fun, to do, and if we are voting on the books of the month when will the voting take place? I think it should be on the same date every month.

Post 29 by Harmony (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Thursday, 20-Sep-2007 4:44:47

I think a book club would be a good idea, but we would have to give everyone time to find the book in they're preferred format and read it before wecan say on what we thought of it.

Post 30 by blbobby (Ooo you're gona like this!) on Thursday, 20-Sep-2007 6:25:56

As far as a place to discuss the book, there are a couple of solutions that come to mind.

The simplist would be to discuss it right here in the book nook under the book's name. Discussion would be open to anyone and might be heavily trafficked by off topic discussions.

We could also set it up on a service like freelists that allow people to join mailing lists, it's fairly easy and I don't believe there are any captias involved.

Or, we could set it up on yahoo groups. I haven't looked at that service in a long time, but I think it's heavily involved with captias and might be difficult to set up or participate in. It does have the advantages of having a voting system and a files area where the current book could be stored.

These are just some of my ideas.

Could a book club room be set up on ventrilo?

Post 34 by Liz (The Original) on Thursday, 20-Sep-2007 23:01:48

Hey all. THanks for your continued interest in this. I'm sorry I haven't visited it in some time--I haven't forgotten, though--I still do want to do it if it's at all feasible. As for a book club room on VT, maybe one could be set up, I don't see why not, but then, I'm not the Powers that Be. I guess I'd really need to think and plan how this would get going. If anyone would be interested in helping me, feel free to let me know.

As far as which books we pick and which formats they're in, I think we'd might want to be sure that everyone could have access to the book who would want to.

I would love to join a bookclub, and I would be happy to help set up the logistics.

Hey, we have a volunteer: thanks kennynaranjo. Hurry, someone take the lead on this thing or it'll die.

As far as v.t. that's okay, but I wouldn't participate. I don't do microphones etc.
